History

History of Life Long Learners

In the spring 1996, two Appalachian Lifelong Learners (ALL) of WVU, Morgantown, WV, same to Fairmont State College to help organize an "Institute for Learning in Retirement."

Kerry Marbury, a teacher at the Fairmont State College, worked with Regina A. Mayolo, Coordinator of Community Services at WVU and Carol S. Wolfe, Administrative Assistant of Community Service at WVU. They held a public meeting at the Fairmont Senior Center and a large turnout of interested people attended.

The two ALL advisors informed and assisted the new Fairmont officers in preparing and setting up the new organization. Fairmont State instructors (current and retired) were encouraged to volunteer to teach classes. The purpose of the new organization was to provide education, recreation, and social opportunities for older adults.

Fairmont State Lifelong Learners officially opened its doors to students in September, 1996 at the Middletown Mall classroom.  In 2002, Fairmont State LLL moved into the Fairmont State Merchant Street Center.  In 2018, LLL moved into Pierpont Community and Technical College's Advanced Technology Center.

May of 2022 we became Marion County Lifelong Learners, an independent organization no longer affiliated with Fairmont State University or Pierpont Community & Technical College.  MCLLL classes are now held at the Marion County YWCA located at 2019 Pleasant Valley Road, Fairmont, West Virginia.

As of May, 2024, we are approved by the IRS for Non-profit 501 (c)(3) status.
